Issue in Canada

Adultery is displayed all over the world; even in a well established country like Canada, moral obligations continue to show a decrease in importance.
Ashley Madison

Ashley Madison is a Canadian-based online dating service founded in 2002 by Darren Morgensten for those who are in current relationships looking to have an affair. Ottawa, the nation's capital, is seen as the old, boring city compared to other Canadian cities. However statistics have shown that 1 out of every 5 residents in Ottawa actually have an Ashley Madison's account. With over 2 million Canadian users on the website and rising, it leaves the impression that the once valued morals are deteriorating (Dilakian).

Divorce

The national divorce rate in Canada is 48% and increasing (Feldstein). Studies have calculated that adultery is said to be approximately 80% of the reason for the cause. Cheating and divorce go hand in hand as shown from statistics. As the amount of people that are not faithful continuinue to increase, the amount of divorces filing up are corresponding. In 2011, 1 in 5 people in their late fifties across the nation filed for a divorce or seperated (Galbraith). Affairs are continuing to be the main reason for divorce, so it brings up the question: What are the reasons behind adultery?

Effect on Kids

Divorce/Seperation is a hard time for a couple, however if the couple have children, it is also a traumatic and devasting period of time for them to cope with as well. An estimated 35% of children across Canada are affected by divorce (Feldstein). For young children especially, there are many short-term and long-term effects that come with the action of seperation:

ShortTerm

Long Term

  • Children may feel guilty for their parents splitting, putting a heavy burden upon themselves

  • Children may become increasingly aggressive, violent and/or uncooperative with everyone surrounding them

  • Children may become emotionally needy as they fear of becoming abandoned

  • Children may become depressed

  • Feelings of anger and resentment against both parents may arise

  • Ability to concentrate in school may become harder, affecting academic performance and social interraction

  • Children tend to be less educated

  • Children will experience anti-social behaviour and/or have a socio-economic disadvantage

  • Children will grow and likely suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction

  • While growing they will exhibit behavioural problems

  • They have a higher chance of becoming teenage parents or conceive a child outside of marriage

  • They have a higher chance of getting married earlier and experiencing a divorce and/or seperation themselves

The effects a divorce has on children is predominantly a short-tem issue as they will learn to grow and adapt to the situation. However, because of the predicament that they are in, they are not set up to reach their full potential, and so as numerous amounts of kids grow up, they experience other struggles in life. Though some do turn out to become successful, the majority will most likely in someway develop negative attributes.
